Project Grace

Project Grace brings together grieving mothers, fathers and families for unique service trips. Project Grace was created with the purpose of providing a compassionate, non-judgmental environment in which participants may honor their loved one through service, while at the same time immersing themselves in a community of support and compassion comprised of women or men who have been
through a similar ordeal. Common ground is reached through sharing stories, offering support, and providing real, tangible aid to a community in need.

In April of 2008 we took our first group of mothers who had lost a child to Bucerias, Mexico to work in an orphanage and volunteer with some other local causes. A second trip for mothers returned to Bucerias in September of 2008.

We are currently looking for participants for our 2009 trips. A men’s trip is planned for February of 2009, and a family trip in June of 2009 will be for siblings, parents, grandparents, or anyone else grieving the loss of a loved one. Both of these trips are offered in partnership with Seeds of Learning (www.seedsoflearning.org) and will involve working to build a school in a Central American community. In April of 2009 we will take another group of
mothers who have lost a child back to Bucerias, Mexico.

Project Grace was inspired by the documentary film Motherland, which follows six women, all mothers who were grieving the death of a child, as they traveled together to South Africa to work in an area burdened by HIV/AIDS.  Filmmaker Jennifer Steinman chronicled the mothers in their efforts to find meaning in
their loss, and discover the healing power of service to others. For information on the documentary film Motherland, see www.motherland-thefilm.org.

If you or someone you know is interested in participating in this program we would love to hear from you. Scholarships are available.

New York, New York and San Francisco, California May 30, 2008 - Jerry White, Co-Founder of Survivor Corps and author of “I Will Not Be Broken” will join Drs. Gloria & Heidi Horsley on their nationally syndicated talk radio program “Healing the Grieving Heart” June 5th at 9 AM PST/12 Noon EST.

“Jerry’s story, and the stories of the thousands of people he and Survivor Corps have helped overcome staggering disabilities resulting from violence and armed conflict are inspiring,” said Dr. Heidi Horsley, Co-Host of Healing the Grieving Heart.

Jerry White is an American political activist and co-founder of Survivor Corps. He is a recognized leader of the historic International Campaign to Ban Landmines, co-recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize, and co-founder of Survivor Corps (formerly Landmine Survivors Network - the first international organization created by and for survivors to help victims of war rebuild their lives). He is a leading expert on survivorship and resilience. His life’s work-transforming victims into survivors-is fueled by the conviction that, with the right tools, everyone can rise above tragedy and give back to their communities.

“We’re excited to bring Jerry’s story and mission of hope to our audience,” commented Dr. Gloria Horsley, Host of ‘Healing the Grieving Heart” and Chairperson of The Open to Hope Foundation (http://www.opentohope.com), sponsor of “Healing the Grieving Heart” and The Grief Blog (http://www.thegriefblog.com).

In 1984, White lost his leg-and almost his life-in a landmine accident. He has endured the pain of loss and the challenge of rebuilding. As co-founder of Survivor Corps, He has led efforts to draft and enact human rights and humanitarian laws that promote and protect the rights of 650 million people with disabilities. Through Survivor Corps, White is building a global movement to address the root causes of violence and armed conflict around the world.

White arranged for, and escorted, Diana, Princess of Wales, on her last humanitarian mission, to Bosnia and Herzegovina, and then spearheaded efforts to promote a mine-free Middle East with King Hussein and Queen Noor of Jordan.
White has appeared and published extensively in the media; testified before the United States Congress and the United Nations; and received several awards in recognition of his humanitarian and human rights leadership, including: the first International UNA Humanitarian Prize from Sir Paul McCartney and Heather Mills; the 2001 Paul G. Hearne/American Association of People with Disabilities Leadership Award; the 2000 Mohammed Amin Humanitarian Award; Brown University’s 2000 William Rogers Alumni Award; the Center for International Rehabilitation’s Leadership Award in 1999; and the 1997 Nobel Prize for Peace awarded to the International Campaign to Ban Landmines.

American Foundation for Suicide Prevention Reaches Agreement with General Motors

American Foundation for Suicide Prevention
Earlier this week the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention asked General Motors to pull an advertisement and cease any further promotion and marketing of an ad, which featured a GM factory robot who gets laid off, becomes depressed and then makes a suicide attempt.

This morning our Foundation had several constructive conversations with GM Executives, and I am pleased to announce that GM has decided to pull the ad, including plans to air it on upcoming television programs and on the company’s website.

GM has indicated that they will be revising the ad, removing the scene with the suicide attempt and any implication of suicide before re-releasing the ad in the future.

AFSP and GM have issued a joint statement about the company’s decision and our support of it.

AFSP applauds General Motors for taking these actions.  It is difficult to find organizations that listen. GM did by responding to the concerns of those touched by mental illness and suicide.

Thank you to everyone who joined with us in expressing concerns about the ad.

Our collective actions have raised awareness, and will help make our country more sensitive to the issues of mental illness and suicide.

Byron Katie - A Thousand Names for JoyByron Katie lived an “ordinary American life,” until her late thirties, when she began to suffer from depression and anxiety. Her condition worsened until she found it difficult get out of bed, relate to her family, or work. Then one day, without apparent cause, she had a life-changing experience. In her words, “I saw clearly, irrevocably, that everything was backward, upside down from what I believed. My thinking had opposed everything as it truly was and reacted with stories of how I thought it should be. “My husband should be more honest.”

“My children should respect me more.” Now I saw that instead of seeing what was happening, I was placing conditions on what was happening - as if I had the ability to dictate reality.

It was clear to me now that the truth was the extreme opposite. My husband should not be more honest - because he wasn’t. My children shouldn’t respect me more - because they didn’t. Instantly I became a lover of reality. I noticed that this felt more natural, more peaceful.”

She has developed a method of self-realization based on this experience which she teaches at workshops and seminars around the world. Throughout North America and Europe, Byron Katie International offers free events in which Katie does The Work with as many audience members as time allows. It also offers two-day intensives and the nine-day School for The Work with Byron Katie. The Work of Byron Katie Foundation is a nonprofit organization that provides educational materials free to all who request them and sponsors the training of educators, therapists, and prison-workers.
