‘Have Faith and Pursue the Unknown End’

What life still holds for us after significant loss is one of life’s many “unknown ends.” You may be old enough to remember the 1960’s television game show, “Let’s Make a Deal,” hosted by Monty Hall. A hallmark of the show was that people sitting in the audience would dress in silly and outrageous outfits all trying to get the host’s attention in hopes of becoming the next contestant. The person selected to be a contestant would win a small amount of cash. He or she could either keep the cash or risk losing it for, “What is behind, door […]

A Personal Egypt: Accepting God’s Guidance in Our Journey Toward Inner Peace

We were slaves to the Pharaohs in Egypt, but the Lord led us out of there with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm. (Deuteronomy 6:21) One of the keys to a more peaceful life is learning when to allow oneself to be led and when to take life by the horns.  Both of these inner-actions are necessary at different times.  As we reach a point within ourselves where we are able to live in the middle, between the tensions of when to relinquish control and when to assume it, we will have reached a place where real spiritual growth […]

The Greater Question

This article is an excerpt from “Living at God’s Speed, Healing in God’s Time” written by Charles W. Sidoti and Rabbi Akiva Feinstein. Seldom does a week (or even a day or an hour) go by when we are not confronted with the question “Why?”  Why are lives devastated by illness, hunger, and devastating loss?  Why financial crisis, abusive and broken relationships?  Why car wrecks and plane crashes?  Why do children need to die?  Our generation is also challenged by global “whys?” There are catastrophic natural phenomena, tsunamis, earthquakes, war, and events like 9/11, to name but a few.  Tragedy […]

The Season of Advent Helps Nurture the Waiting Heart

Advent is a season observed in many Western Christian churches as a time of expectant waiting and preparation for the celebration of the Nativity of Jesus at Christmas.  The term is an Anglicized version of the Latin word adventus, meaning “coming”. One of the greatest influences in my spiritual life is an audiotaped lecture called “A Spirituality of Waiting” by the late Fr. Henri J.M. Nouwen. Over the years I have returned to this wonderful recording during Advent, always finding its message fresh and meaningful. I have come to realize that having “a waiting heart,” as Fr. Nouwen suggests, not only fits well […]

Looking Back – From the Moon!

This article is an excerpt from Living at God’s Speed, Healing in God’s Time. One of the most enlightening films I have ever seen is Ron Howard’s 2007 documentary In the Shadow of the Moon.  In the film, Apollo astronaut Jim Lovell reflects upon his amazing experience of looking back at the Earth while orbiting the moon.  Lovell explains how, as he looked out the window of the spaceship and raised his hand in front of his face, the Earth appeared so small that he was able to block it out completely behind his thumb.  What a perspective!  I have done […]

Life Moves Ahead: Discovering the Freedom to Go With It

This article was written by Charles W. Sidoti and Rabbi Akiva Feinstein.  It is an excerpt from Living at God’s Speed, Healing in God’s Time. Our world and our individual lives are in the process of evolving.  It is not a question of rejecting the past but of letting the past flow into the present and letting this process guide us as to how to live in the future.  –Jean Vanier, From, Becoming Human Pope John Paul ll, speaking to church leaders about the mission of the church, once said, “We are not here to guard a museum, but rather to […]

Lord, Help Me Let You Be the Shepherd of My Life

This article was wrtten by Charles W. Sidoti and Rabbi Akiva Feinstein.  It is an excerpt from Living at God’s Speed, Healing in God’s Time. The Psalms are unique among the books of the Bible, revealing a mysterious healing quality in their ability to connect with us at a personal and profound level.  It is not uncommon when reading the Psalms to find that the words give expression to our most human emotions at the very core of our being – emotions that range from the deepest, darkest despair to the most exultant, liberating joy.  The ability of the Psalms […]

I Found Hope, Healing and Grace in the Humanity of Christ

An excerpt from Fortune Cookie Wisdom: a contemplative perspective This reflection is about how we discover the truth in our lives. “From error to error, one discovers the entire truth” – Dr. Sigmund Freud, Austrian psychologist (1856-1939).  Could Jesus, while he walked the earth, identify with Freud’s statement?   If the words are applicable to the human condition it is reasonable to assume that the answer is “yes.”  For Christians, the great mystery of Jesus is that he was truly human and truly God.  A Jesus without the truly human aspect leaves only the divine, which would mean that he wasn’t really […]

Our World, God’s World: Handling Significant Change

Coming to terms with life’s constant change is one of the greatest challenges that we face.  It is interesting to note, however, that there are many areas of life in which we often have little or no trouble accepting change.  Sometimes we welcome it with open arms; at other times we may find it bittersweet.  Many parents experience the bittersweet aspect of change as they watch their child board the kindergarten bus on the first day of school.  The change of seasons is an example of a change that we often take in stride, accepting it as a natural and […]

Finding Grace in Grieving

An excerpt from “Fortune Cookie Wisdom: a contemplative perspective” by Charles W. Sidoti Have you ever experienced a severe episode of anxiety or what is commonly referred to as a panic attack? It may be triggered by something obvious like a traumatic event or a tragic loss; or it can seem to come out of nowhere. An overwhelming but vague fear suddenly comes upon you. Adrenalin is released into the bloodstream. Your brain shifts into overdrive as you frantically try to think your way out of the crippling emotional distress. Your body is in the classic fight or flight mode. […]
