Listen Here: Why We Grieve For Celebs_02
Tags: celebrity death, grieving fans, whitney houstonWhitney Houston’s passing has stunned her fans and fellow entertainers, but what does the ‘round-the-clock media coverage of celebrity deaths say about our culture? Is feeling a sense of deep loss because of a celebrity’s death a sign of obsession or a normal reminder of our own mortality?
Very interesting. I’ve been trying to figure out why all the news channels have been focusing on Whitney Houston – without ceasing. My husband keeps saying “what a tragedy” and is watching every program he can. It is a tragedy. I can’t help but think that fans put way too much pressure on celebrities. Celebrities live in glass houses. I can not even imagine what it would be like to live the life they have been forced to live. They are constantly under the microscope.
You are right about celebrity families not being allowed to grieve as they normally would. I just wish all the news media trucks would leave and allow the family to be alone in their grief.
I guess I have a general concern that our society and our children are seeing celebrities as heros. I would like to see news coverage about the millions of people starving and dying all over the globe – and the heros that are working with them.
