Our hearts at the Open to Hope Foundation go out to the people of Norway and the families that have been impacted by this terrible tragedy.
At this point, there can be no sense made of this brutal act of violence. Families, friends and communities will be changed forever in ways that are not yet known.
But one thing we do know is that the people of Norway and the families directly affected are not alone. Every bereaved parent, sibling, spouse and friend is aware of the shock and pain that is felt not only on an individual basis, but on a national level.
Having worked with the 9/11 families for the last ten years, we also understand that as a community we must be careful that the global nature of loss does not interfere with supporting those who have suffered personal tragedy. Only those directly impacted can truly know the sorrow of that empty room and unused bed.
It’s too early to talk about faith, courage, and resilience, however as the tenth anniversary of 9/11 approaches Americans have learned that on a personal and global level we can rally together, support one another, and eventually find hope after loss.
